NAICS Codes for Website Design and Development

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is a standard that was developed by federal statistical agencies as a way to classify different areas of business for the purpose of data collection. Then NAICS codes are intended to identify companies that perform government website design. The NAICS code system is self-assigned for businesses, meaning that if you are a business owner, you will choose the codes that are most closely associated with your business. But for certain industries, NAICS has pre-assigned codes. In this article we will list the NAICS codes for website design.

How do I find a NAICS code?

The North American Industry Classification System has its own website naics.com, which contains a keyword search system that allows you to find different codes through related industry keywords.

The keyword search tool allows you to put in a single keyword that relates to any industry and the search results will return all codes that contain that specific word in the description. This keyword search tool is helpful when creating NAICS codes for your business. You just will need to search keywords that relate to your different subsets of your industry and services you offer, then create your codes accordingly. When using the search tool avoid multiple words or complex search terms, as they often will not generate the results you are looking for.

For this article, we will use the keyword search to pull up the codes that relate to website design.

As you can see from the keyword search for “website design,” it will list the different NAICS codes in order of relevance to that keyword. For example, the first search result “Computer Systems Design Services” relates more to website design than “Architectural Services” listed further down the list. So using these results we will only apply the codes that relate best to our keyword search.

Next we will click on a specific NAICS code (using Computer Systems Design Services), and click the button that says “view SIC” next to it. SIC stands for Standard Industrial Classification, which is used by the government to classify industries using a 4 digit code. 

Here you can see when “Computer Systems Design Services” is clicked, it returns two 4-digit related codes. If you are a business owner, you will want to note each NAICS code as well as the SIC codes listed below it and continue other keyword searches that relate to your business so you have all the required codes you need. Since the NAICS codes can change, you will want to select the most recent code listed.
