Out of Reach helps policy makers, the media and visitors better understand affordable housing data , and how it is near impossible for anyone making a minimum wage income. The Out of Reach advocacy website was developed by Alliance for the National Low Income Housing Coalition a Washington DC based housing advocacy organization dedicated to achieving public policy that insures low income individuals are provided with affordable living options.

NLIHC needed an advocacy website and marketing strategy to deliver awareness to a worrisome trend – affordable rentals were starting to become scarce in major metropolitan areas. Alliance developed Out of Reach, a micro advocacy website that helped policy makers interact with real datasets and calculators. The Out of Reach Initiative consists of state and national research and data analysis on the average hourly wage needed to afford an apartment in each state and number of hours required to work if making a minimum wage income.
The campaign needed to make an impact, our approach was to generate interactive state pages that could be easily shared and encouraged visitors to share a message with their local congressional representative. Alliance Interactive helped develop a data driven campaign using a custom drupal interface for the Out of Reach Initiative. The main section of the website features an interactive map component, that allows individuals to visualize and compare the wage requirements to afford housing throughout the United States. This map serves to educate individuals on how these requirements make affordable housing “out of reach” for anyone making a minimum wage income.
Within one day our media messaging landing our project on the New York Times, etec, ect. Alliance’s interactive approach helped Out of Reach more effectively communicate their message with online individuals through visual data analyzation and reach an audience the NLIHC website may not have otherwise engaged.
