Your website isn’t a brochure you print once and forget about. It’s a living system — software, security, content, and infrastructure all working together — and every piece of it degrades if left alone. Plugins go out of date. Stanford University’s Web Credibility Project, one of the largest independent studies on the subject, surveyed nearly 2,700 people across 100 websites and found that 46% of consumers said visual design, layout, and typography were a top factor in judging a site’s credibility — in finance and travel sites, that number rose above 50% (Stanford Web Credibility Project). As lead researcher B.J. Fogg put it, people judge a website by how it looks — that’s the first test it has to pass.

Mobile makes the speed problem worse. Google’s own research found 53% of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes longer than three seconds to load (Marketing Dive, reporting on Google’s “The Need for Mobile Speed” study). With most web traffic now happening on phones, that’s not a niche concern.

The pattern holds across every independent measure: an unmaintained website doesn’t just look dated. It actively costs you visitors, leads, and sales.
